In a country where surfing was
forbidden, a group of dreamers
turned refrigerators into surfboards
and freedom into a way of life.
In Cuba, where surfing has been banned for decades under Fidel Castro’s regime, a group of passionate
surfers refused to give up on their dream. In defiance of adversity and dodging local authorities, they
carved surfboards out of refrigerator doors and shaped them with cheese graters, crafting their own path
to the waves.
For four days, we immersed ourselves in the Cuban way of life, joining these surfers in their homes, across
La Havana’s vibrant neighborhoods, and navigating the complexities of their realities. The final captures a
story not just of sports, but of resilience, creativity, and passion.
The Cuban Way has been officially selected at over 15 international film festivals, including Academy
Award®-qualifying events, and was featured alongside productions from Amazon and UNICEF at
Sundance’s Brand Storytelling showcase. Screened worldwide in cities from New York to Paris to São
Paulo, the film continues to shine a light on a hidden world and inspire audiences everywhere.
